Slick City South Philadelphia residents see no black gold in massive underground oil spill. Tamar Charry Philadelphia City Paper (PA) September 28?October 5, 1995 There's oil underneath the Defense Personnel Supply Center (DPSC). But it's not the stuff of Jed Clampett's daydreams. It's more like a million-gallon underground version of the Exxon-Valdez nightmare. And as the government tries to shut down the 83-year-old DPSC, South Philly residents are fighting to find out who is responsible for the diesel and gasoline slick, which covers more than 2 million square feet. South Philly residents say they are furious that no one told them the extent of the problem until last Thursday, when they were updated about the hazardous waste cleanup at the DPSC, in a building often referred to as the Quartermaster Depot.The cleanup is being undertaken in preparation for the facility's relocation, scheduled for no later than July of 1999. ...
