A dirty subject City says park is safe; a new report suggests otherwise By SCOTT STREATER FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM (TX) February 9, 2006 FORT WORTH -- A new report by a University of Texas at Arlington professor raises concerns that people using Greenbriar Park in south Fort Worth are being exposed to harmful levels of toxic arsenic. The eight-page report by Jeff Howard, a professor of urban and public affairs, concludes that arsenic levels in the soil in the most heavily used areas of the park -- the playground, pavilion, community center and near an artificial lake where residents fish -- are "well above the level of concern" for health established by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. "Unless the city can unequivocally demonstrate that arsenic concentrations two to four times higher than the EPA level of concern are of no consequence for public health," the park should be avoided by the general public, "especially children," according to Howard's report. It also recommends that the city slow ongoing efforts to upgrade the park until more soil samples are taken "to provide a clearer picture of the extent of arsenic contamination." ...
