Metal in wells spurs state ban on green' ammo at base By AMANDA LEHMERT and DAVID KIBBE Cape Cod Times (MA) February 17, 2006 BOSTON - The Massachusetts National Guard yesterday suspended use of the so-called green bullet at the Massachusetts Military Reservation, citing concerns that the metal in the ammunition has reached Cape Cod's groundwater. When the tungsten-nylon bullets were introduced in 1999, they were hailed as an environmentally friendly solution to lead ammunition. But in the past two years researchers have explored whether tungsten is toxic or might be linked to childhood leukemia. The Army Environmental Center Wednesday told the Guard it found 15 parts per billion of tungsten in a 100-foot-deep groundwater well one mile from the base boundary. ...
