Work to proceed at Galbraith FieldBy DAVID BERGENGREN Springfield Republican (MA) March 1, 2006 EASTHAMPTON - Local health officials gave the go-ahead yesterday for construction work to begin at Galbraith Field and opened up the possibility the Kiwanis Club's annual Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza could continue to be held there. In a Feb. 28 letter to the Williston Northampton School, which owns the field, the Board of Health and Board of Public Works lifted an Oct. 8 stop work order on the school's plans to move an outdoor track and build tennis courts there. The order was issued after tests on soil, sediment and water revealed the presence of small amounts of perchlorate, a potential drinking water hazard. Yesterday's green light was given after health agent Dennis R. Lacourse received a Feb. 27 letter from the state Department of Environmental Protection containing the opinion that perchlorate found at the site poses no "immediate or substantial threat" to the city's drinking water. "We're glad that it's all turning out OK," Lacourse said. "The contamination that's there now doesn't appear to be a threat to the town's water supply, but certainly it's something that we're going to be paying attention to in the future." ...
