Tonopah has the right stuff: airspaceBy PHILLIP GOMEZ Pahrump Valley Times (NV) March 10, 2006 The old Tonopah Army airfield and practice bombing range could see some economic redevelopment now that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has gotten the lead out - and Nye County is getting the infrastructure in. That's lead from .50-cal. machine gun bullets, unexploded bombs and other ordnance that have contaminated the soils and pose a hazard to humans venturing onto the base eight miles east of Tonopah in the Ralston Valley. The old World War II-era airfield is one of a few small, general aviation airports in the state with a through East-West flight corridor for non-military aircraft. Pilots have to maneuver around the state's several large "military operations areas," restricted flight zones and "special military activity" zones as they often do elsewhere in Nevada, said Joni Eastley, District II commissioner on the Nye County Board of Commissioners. Tonopah is part of Eastley's large geographic district. ...
