Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] New Haven Depot (IN) mercury |
Depot stuck in time warp Future's in doubt for New Haven metals storage site slated to close by 2009 A Column by Kevin Leininger Fort Wayne Journal Gazette (IN) March 30, 2006 The sprawling New Haven Depot could have become the only repository for 4,436 tons of government-owned mercury. But after the February decision to move federal mercury stockpiles from New Haven and two other sites to Hawthorne, Nev., the 64-year-old depot is considered so obsolete it could close within three years. And that would be just fine with New Haven Mayor Terry McDonald, who sees gold in the 268 mostly empty acres once piled with an array of other less-precious, but strategically important, metals and materials. "It's a great facility, and we wouldn't say no if Washington wants to give it to New Haven," McDonald said of the depot at 15411 Dawkins Road, which stretches for nearly a mile along the highway just east of New Haven. "(U.S. 3rd District Rep.) Mark Souder and I have talked about it, but he'd like to see it cleaned up first." Making sure the site is free of contamination is one of several things that must happen before it is turned over for civilian use, according to John Olszewski, who manages the depot for the Defense National Stockpile Center. ...
