Experts disarm six, 250-pound bombs from scrap yard
HERMISTON -- Bomb technicians disarmed and removed six, 250-pound bombs Friday from a scrap yard where one of the World War II-era devices exploded as it was processed, authorities said. Oregon State Police bomb technicians also found and disarmed 15 more practice bombs at a farm near the old Boardman Bombing Range. All of the devices were taken to the range in a dump truck filled with sand, said Mike Monroe, who owns the property where the recycling yard is located. About 20 bombs were accidentally included in a pile of scrap metal brought to RS Davis Recycling. One of the devices exploded as it was passing through a 60-ton shear bailer, Monroe said. ... (AP) — A World War II-era practice bomb exploded at a recycling center, but there were no injuries or substantial damage, authorities said. The bomb was one of about 20 that were mistakenly taken to Davis Recycling in Hermiston, said Detective Dennis Wagner of the Oregon State Police. Wagner said workers from the recycling center went to Inland Farms, west of Boardman, to retrieve scrap metal. They instead picked up old munitions that farmers had unearthed over the years. The farm is located a few miles west of a Naval bombing range and may have been part of it at one time, Wagner said. The bomb that exploded had been placed in a crushing machine, which is used to chop large pieces of scrap metal into smaller pieces for transport. ...
