Old ammo still in AdairBy KYLE ODEGARD Corvallis Gazette-Times (OR) April 7, 2006 Agency discusses upcoming inspection of former military base ADAIR VILLAGE — Soldiers used more than pistols and rifles for target practice at Camp Adair during World War II. They also fired rockets, mortars and heavy artillery and threw live grenades. Some of those explosives are still in the fields and forests where the Army practiced, said a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers representative. "It's not a lot over 60 years, but it's pretty consistent - things being found every five or 10 years and as recently as 2001. It's still out there," said Zane Tuta, technical lead for Shaw Environmental of Denver, Colo., a Corps of Engineers contractor. ...
