Korea, U.S. to discuss base contamination issue By Jin Dae-woong Korea Herald April 18, 2006 Korea and the United States are expected to conclude negotiations on cleaning up contamination at U.S. bases by late this month, Seoul officials said. The officials also said the two countries have recently agreed to upgrade the level of negotiators for the final round of discussions to expedite a resolution of the matter. "Instead of waiting for the 8th round of SPI (Security Policy Initiative) meeting, the two countries are likely to hold a high-level meeting soon. It is aimed at candidly exchanging the position of both sides in the final negotiation," an official said, declining to be identified. The decision was made after the United States reiterated its position that it will not take any further responsibility for base contamination other than what it has already offered, he added. ...
