Navy weighs its options for water towerBy Joe Baker Newport Daily News (RI) April 18, 2006 PORTSMOUTH - While work continues to seal lead paint on the water tower abutting Melville School, the Navy is weighing a variety of options for a long-term solution. Last September, school officials discovered that paint chips flaking off the tower contained lead, a toxic metal that can cause severe mental disabilities in children. The Navy only recently erected scaffolding around the tower to stop further flaking until a long-term solution can be developed. Capt. Todd W. Malloy, commanding officer of Naval Station Newport, told members of a legislative commission Monday that the Navy is considering four possible solutions to the lead problem. They are: - Repainting the tower with lead-free paint. - Razing the tower and building a new one. - Installing a pump system to replace the tower. - Tying into the Portsmouth municipal water system. ...
