Proposed park has toxic soil The land the university proposes to give the state in return for a stadium subsidy was polluted by a World War II gunpowder plant.
To win taxpayer support for a new Gophers football stadium, the University of Minnesota has described its UMore Park in Dakota County as a priceless nature preserve, a jewel that it would share with the state in exchange for a $235 million stadium subsidy. The 2,840-acre green space offered for trade to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is home to two endangered species, the Blanding's turtle and loggerhead shrike, and its recreational uses could include gardens and horseback riding, legislators have been told. What hasn't been discussed is the land's toxic legacy from World War II, a gunpowder plant that created a chemical blight that could be costly to clean up and restrict the site's future use. ...
