Walter Chun has spent much of his life watching out for the safety of others. Once an investigator for the federal government, he headed the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration in the Pacific, traveling throughout the region to ensure conditions in businesses in American Samoa, Saipan, Hawaii and surrounding areas were safe for workers. For 37 years, he worked in risk management, occupational safety and health, environmental protection and a wide range of risk assessment projects in a variety of government jobs including the Safety Director at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.

Now employed in management by Metcalf Construction, a small local private contracting company, Chun has uncovered a potential environmental nightmare while on a job at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base that has led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Health to launch a joint investigation into the U.S. Navy’s management of the project.
