Bush proposes $15 million for cleanup of Middlesex plantBy GIOVANNA FABIANO Bridgewater Courier News (NJ) May 2, 2006 MIDDLESEX BOROUGH -- The cleanup of the former Middlesex Sampling Plant -- an atomic research factory until 1967 -- can finally be completed, thanks to $15 million in federal funds proposed in President Bush's 2007 budget. The 9-acre site on Mountain Avenue was once used to process radioactive ores as part of the Manhattan Project to develop the first atomic bomb. Though the site hasn't been operational in decades, large amounts of chemical and radioactive contamination still exist in what officials assure is a "secured and contained" area. Federal and state officials, including Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., D-Long Branch, Middlesex Mayor Jerry D'Angelo and members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -- which is responsible for the site -- announced the proposed funds Monday at the former plant. ...
