Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Perchlorate in fireworks, Marshfield, MA |
Letter: Selectmen shouldn't 'scold' BPW for doing what 'elected to do'Kathryn P. Webers Marshfield Mariner (MA) May 3, 2006 To the Editor: Many people have asked me why I am not seeking reelection to the Board of Public Works. This letter will provide some of the reasons. As Board of Public Works commissioners, we are responsible for the town's drinking water supply and have been concerned about increasing levels of perchlorate, a contaminant found in explosives and fireworks, and harmful to children, teenagers, pregnant women, and people with compromised thyroid glands. Federal standards exist for this contaminant and states are establishing maximum allowable levels for drinking water. We have been concerned that fireworks near the one town drinking water well testing positive for perchlorate have, over many years, contributed to the contamination of that well. The commissioners believe that Marshfield should follow the recommendations of the U.S. EPA, Massachusetts DEP, and state environmental agencies to minimize exposure of drinking water wells to perchlorate. ...
