Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Bellvue (CO) Atlas missile site

Contaminated soil to be trucked out
Old missile site in Bellvue area hasn't affected drinking water

Environmental agencies plan to remove Cold War-era contamination from the
Bellvue area this spring.

An estimated 35 cubic yards of soil near an Atlas E missile site, sullied
by polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, will be excavated and trucked to the
North Weld County Landfill in Ault, which is permitted to take such waste.

A cubic yard of soil is enough to cover 100 square feet about 2 or 3 inches
deep.

Cleanup could be completed within a month.

"The PCB issue will be over and done with," said Ed LaRock, an
environmental geologist for the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment.

Groundwater in the area was contaminated with trichloroethylene, or TCE,
though none has shown up in testing of area drinking water wells, according
to the state, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers.
