State funds sought for military supportBARRY SMITH Jacksonville Daily News (NC) May 22,2006 RALEIGH - An effort is under way in the General Assembly to make permanent a couple of the programs that came out of efforts to show the Department of Defense that North Carolina is a military friendly state. Bills have been filed in the state House and Senate that would put a $2 million annual appropriation into the military programs. Half of the money would be used for recreational and morale programs for the military and their families. The other half would go toward programs to help the state's military bases buy up land to prevent development encroachment. "Certainly we want to support military families, boost their morale and help them in anyway possible," said Sen. Pete Bland, D-Craven, who introduced the bill in the Senate. ...
