Base targets tungstenBy AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times (MA) May 24, 2006 CAMP EDWARDS - Work crews this week began removing tons of tungsten-tainted soil from firing ranges at the Massachusetts Military Reservation to protect groundwater under the base. Army investigators discovered earlier this spring that tungsten - part of the "environmentally friendly" bullet used at the base since 1999 - had washed off the ranges and into the aquifer under the facility. The aquifer is the Upper Cape's sole source of drinking water. There are no federal or state guidelines for tungsten in drinking water, but the metal is being studied for possible toxic effects. Tungsten recently was found at high levels in the bodies of residents in a Nevada town stricken with an unexpectedly high number of childhood leukemia cases. ...
