Senators withhold $7.3M for land buys
Money was intended for MCAS Beaufort

Delays in implementing new zoning standards to protect Marine Corps Air 
Station Beaufort from encroachment could cost the region $7.3 million 
that had been set aside for land purchases.

More than 18 months ago, Beaufort County, the city of Beaufort and Port 
Royal endorsed the Joint Land Use Study, a regional planning effort to 
determine best-fit zoning and allowable development in noise and 
accident zones surrounding the air station.

Without full compliance from local governments with the zoning standards 
directed in the land-use study, the Senate Armed Services Committee 
decided last week to pull the more than $7 million from the Department 
of Defense's 2007 budget.
