Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] EPA's response to Children's Health Committee letter on perchlorate |
On May 11, 2006, U.S. EPA Assistant Administrator for the Office of
Solid Waste and Emergency Response, Susan Parker Bodine, sent a letter
to Melanie A. Marty, Chair of the Children's Health Protection Advisory
Committee, in response to that Committee's March 8, 2006 letter
concerning the regulation of perchlorate. The full letter is available
as a 152K PDF file from http://yosemite.epa.gov/ochp/ochpweb.nsf/content/5112006.htm/$file/5112006.pdf. Bodine's key points appear to be: 1. EPA's Preliminary Remediation Goal (PRG) of 24.5 parts per billion for perchlorate is protective because it is based upon a non-adverse effect. 2. The PRG is not a final cleanup level, but a "starting point for site-specific goals." 3. National data on perchlorate in food are insufficient to establish a relative source contribution factor for perchlorate. 4. EPA's Office of Water is evaluating, following its established process, whether the agency should promulgate a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for perchlorate. In other words, EPA is not changing anything in response to the Children's Health Committee letter. Lenny --
