Support vets poisoned by uraniumCommentary by James H. Barlow Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (NY) June 15, 2006 John DePersis, chairman of the New York American Legion's New York state legislative committee, has issued a memorandum in support of proposed state legislation to assist soldiers returning from battle who may have been exposed to radioactive "depleted" uranium used in weapons — or other toxic materials. The bill would require the state Division of Veterans' Affairs to help veterans who were exposed to hazardous chemicals during combat to tap federal aid to finance medical services. Also under the proposal, a task force would be set up to study the effects of hazardous materials on soldiers and establish a registry of veterans who may have been exposed to such materials during the first Gulf War. Connecticut and Louisiana have already passed similar measures. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports that 250,000 troops are disabled and 15,000 had early deaths from the Gulf War of 1991. Vaccinations, oil well fires or exploded chemical and biological agents may have been part of the cause. More illness and deaths are being reported from the Iraqi invasion of 2003. ...
