Agency forecasts cleanup stoppage Corps of Engineers moves to allay concerns about removal of soil from National Lead site By JORDAN CARLEO-EVANGELIST Albany Times Union June 20, 2006 COLONIE -- Federal money for removing tons of radioactive dirt from the site of a defunct Central Avenue munitions plant could be exhausted by December, after which work there will halt temporarily, officials said Monday. Nevertheless, the Army Corps of Engineers vowed to finish the job at the former National Lead plant, even if it cannot say when. The project's manager briefed state and town officials Monday on a new plan to do as much work as possible in the coming months before the site is effectively shut down until more money is available. Crews already have stopped shipping soil off the site on rail cars, and are preparing it for long-term storage on a cement pad. Meanwhile, town officials and activists sought assurances that the storage will not be permanent and will be done safely. ...
