By SUKHJIT PUREWAL MOnterey Herald (CA) June 22, 2006 What had been advertised as Fort Ord's controlled burn of 2003 quickly morphed into the "out-of-control" burn of 2003. The scheduled 500-acre burn became a 1,500-acre blaze and a public relations nightmare that lingers in the minds of some Peninsula residents. It is a memory still fresh in the minds of the Fort Ord Base Realignment and Closure team as it prepares to carry out its second burn since the accident three years ago. A small burn in September was carried out by the Fort Ord Reuse Authority. Having learn important lessons from the 2003 fire, this year's scheduled burn should not run into the same complications, said Lyle Shurtleff, environmental scientist with the Department of the Army Installation Management Base Realignment and Closure Fort Ord office. ...
