Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] East Acton (MA) perchlorate |
Chemical reach is uncertainBy Patricia Bertuccio Acton Beacon (MA) June 29, 2006 ACTON - For the past nine months, the possible contamination of some East Acton private water supplies has leached into controversy and uncertainty Two homeowners found the toxin perchlorate in wells following construction blasting at a nearby senior housing development. In recent weeks angry neighbors concerned about the heath of their families have urged town officials to intervene. Perchlorate traces in two private wells on Brabrook Road were found last March after James Fenton, a local developer, started his work nearby. The previous October he used explosives on his expansion project at the Ellsworth Village, located on Great Road and extending to the end of Brabrook. But he denies ever using perchlorate chemicals. The causality points to Fenton's explosives as the pollutant, but further discussions among officials at the state and local level aren't so sure that's the case. Perchlorate took the spotlight in 2002, after it was found in an aquifer in Bourne. The contaminant was first reported in the area after water was tested at a swimming pool at the Harvard Ridge Condominiums in Boxborough in 2005. The substance is unregulated and its sources are varied. ... For the entire article, see http://www2.townonline.com/acton/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=527482 --
