Navy to Sharpen Its Aim In PolkBy Bill Rufty Lakeland Ledger (FL) June 30, 2006 LAKELAND -- The U.S. Navy on Wednesday officially named the Avon Park Air Force Range, which straddles the Polk-Highlands county line, as the replacement target range for its operations at Vieques, Puerto Rico. The official announcement was made Wednesday, but it had been expected for several months. The 106,073-acre bombing range is the largest military range east of the Mississippi River, with multiple uses for military training. U.S. Rep Adam Putnam, whose office made the announcement, said the decision is good for the nation and good news for Central Florida. Navy planes already use the range occasionally. But the annual bombing runs at the Avon Park range will increase from 6,900 to 9,998, as operations phased out in Vieques are redirected to Avon Park. ...
