Officials to assess encroachment on base Land use study could help protect Scott from closing BY JENNIFER A. BOWEN Belleville News-Democrat (IL) July 9, 2006 O'FALLON - Officials from O'Fallon and surrounding communities will meet with Scott Air Force Base officials to discuss ways to help city and county planners curb encroachment on the base. City officials will meet with Col. Alan Hunt, commander of the 375th Airlift Wing at the base, and with the base's community planner, Tim Stone, to discuss an upcoming Joint Land Use Study. "We want to protect Scott Air Force Base any way we can, and this is a big step toward that," said Ted Shekell, O'Fallon's director of planning and zoning. "Encroachment is a big negative and something (the military) really considers during the Base Realignment and Closure process." The next round of closures are expected to be held starting in 2012. The Joint Land Use Study is a cooperative land use planning effort between the military and the surrounding communities and is designed to promote community growth and development that is compatible with an installation's training and operational missions. ...
