TNT manufacturing leads to plant site's pollutionBy Mike Pare Chatanooga Times Free Press (TN) August 23, 2006 Decades of making TNT when environmental awareness was less keen than today created the pollution problem at the former Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant, officials say. Scott Bolton, the Army Command representative on the site, said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency did not open its doors until 1970, or nearly 30 years after TNT production had started on the property. But, he said, the Army is responsible for remediation, and the federal government is paying the estimated $85 million cost to clean up the 6,600-acre tract. ...
