Ashland cleanBY JESSICA GASPAR The Tonawanda News (NY) September 15, 2006 After years of contamination and waste, Town of Tonawanda officials met at a pristine Ashland site Thursday. A Colorado blue spruce was planted to commemorate the cleanup of the Ashland site, which has been going on since 1998. The site was once used for storing uranium processing wastes, said Jim Karsten, former Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program manager for the corps. The activity at the site was performed under the Manhattan Project during the 1940s. The site has three affected areas, including parts of Rattlesnake Creek, Karsten said. "All these areas are now cleaned up," Karsten said. "There is not stigma of radioactive material." ...
