County approves growth policyBy SONJA LEE Great Falls Tribune (MT) September 20, 2006 A new growth policy will guide development in Cascade County and a last-minute amendment puts the brakes on potential development encroaching on a closed runway at Malmstrom Air Force Base. Such development could hurt the chances of a new flying mission. Cascade County Commissioners on Tuesday approved the 2006 Growth Policy. The policy sets out the tools the county has to protect the environment and farmland and to promote development. Commissioner Joe Briggs amended the policy to prohibit development in military runway accident potential zones. The zones are designated at both ends of runways, which support or could support military fixed wing operations. Briggs' amendment notes, "the runway at MAFB is one of the community's largest untapped resources."
