Residents wary of Wenham Lake assurancesBy Bob Gates Beverly Citizen (MA) October 11, 2006 Treatment of groundwater pollution near Beverly Airport has begun and an environmental engineering company hired by the city expects the sites to be clean sometime next year. But some residents expressed concerns about the assuring words from the engineers this week, calling for further investigations and a more extensive cleanup process at public meeting Tuesday night. ... The state Department of Environmental Protection had written to city officials in April 2005 to say it would start imposing a $1,000 per-day fine, per site, if the cleanup work was not completed. The property was once home to a chemical-mixing and storage facility, and is on part of a former Army missile battery facility, according to a report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
