Feds take over Superfund plan for site As the EPA and former company negotiate, toxins pour into the Willamette BY JULIE SULLIVAN AND ALEX PULASKI The Oregonian October 13, 2006 Over various stretches of six decades, a manufacturer now known as Arkema Inc. dumped, piped and leaked poisonous DDT, rocket propellant, ammonia, hydrochloric acid and other chemicals onto its North Portland grounds. The chemical stew, pushing its way through groundwater into the Willamette River, has created the most contaminated site that federal officials see in a Superfund cleanup along a six-mile stretch of the river. Frustrated by the progress of Arkema and its agents on their piece of the cleanup, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this week announced it would take the unusual measure of taking over planning the site's initial work. ...
