Last month, Portage County residents learned for the first time that 41,000 pounds of cluster bombs exploded that day, with debris spreading over more than 600 acres. Most of the debris landed inside the arsenal, but some fell over about 20 acres of private property near Nichols and Smalley roads in Freedom Township. Although decades have passed, the government wants to make sure no debris remains and no one has unearthed and kept any live ammo as "souvenirs," said Mary Ellen Maly, the Military Munitions Response Program manager. ...
