Dahlgren toxics: No threat

People living and working on the Dahlgren Navy base are exposed to contaminants related to decades of weapons testing and development.


The good news, according to a final report issued this week by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry in Atlanta, is that toxic materials are below harmful levels.

The Free Lance-Star reported on the agency's draft report in June; the final report had no major changes.

Items reviewed were the base's classified activities, river safety concerns for recreation boaters, drinking water protection, dietary exposure, hunter safety on former firing ranges, explosive hazards from methane in landfills and lead exposure.
