Perchlorate Cleanup Deal ExpectedBy Reina V. Slutske Santa Clarita (Saugus) Signal (CA) November 5, 2006 Board members and staff of the Castaic Lake Water Agency are hoping to reach a final settlement regarding payment for cleanup at the Whittaker-Bermite site by the end of the year. "It's my thought that we will achieve a settlement by year's end, and there's still hope for that," general manager Dan Masnada said. The lawsuit was filed by the Castaic Lake Water Agency and other local water purveyors in 1999. The legal action would require Whittaker-Bermite to pay cleanup fees for the 996-acre Saugus property, formerly the site of munitions manufacturing and now polluted with perchlorate, a rocket fuel byproduct that has been linked to thyroid problems. ...
