Cranberry bog deal going sourBy STEPHANIE VOSK Cape Cod Times (MA) November 11, 2006 Cranberry bogs free of contamination should be a good thing, but in Mashpee it could mean less revenue for the town. The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence has paid the town annual compensation since the late 1990s for berries from six cranberry bogs that were contaminated by pollution from Otis Air National Guard Base. For the last growing season, the Air Force paid compensation of about $305,000, with 75 percent going to grower Brian Handy and the rest going to the town, according to Mashpee conservation agent Steve Solbo. The compensation deal is based on the fair market value of the last cranberry crop that was harvested from bogs, he said. ...
