CAFB environmental cleanup sites progressing well, officials sayBy Michael McCollum Columbus Commercial Dispatch (MS) December 9, 2006 Environmental engineers contracted by the Columbus Air Force Base discussed restoration efforts Thursday of two on-base hazardous environmental sites during an annual technical review committee meeting at the Link Auditorium. The meeting was federally mandated as part of the Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), also known as the Superfund law, to ensure the public is aware of hazardous waste activity at military installations. Although members of the public were welcome to attend, no city council members or county supervisors were in attendance, nor did any community or business groups attend the meeting. Dr. Kang Xia of the Mississippi Chemical Lab at Mississippi State University and Robert Lytch of the Army Corps of Engineers were the only two people present. ...
