'Toxic Chemicals Detected in Returned US Bases' By Jung Sung-ki Korea Times January 18, 2007Some U.S. bases returned to South Korea last year contain dumped electronic transformers with toxic chemicals of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) exceeding national environmental standards, a lawmaker said Thursday. Rep. Woo Won-shik of the governing Uri Party said such contaminated transformers were detected in 10 out of 15 U.S. facilities handed over to South Korea under an agreement struck last July, citing a report by the Ministry of Environment. PCBs were included in a list of toxic chemicals that the U.S. military had pledged to clean up before the base return process, Woo said. He is calling to nullify the base return pact and to renegotiate on the matter. ...
