Contaminated dirt to be removed along Canal Road 9,000 tons along Canal Road were tainted by dioxin By MIKE KELLER Biloxi Sun-Herald (MS) February 8, 2007GULFPORT - Navy contractors are completing a plan to remove nearly 9,000 tons of recently discovered contaminated soil running parallel to Canal Road. "The piles range up to 7 or 8 feet above the normal elevation," said Bob Mertz, an engineer with Tetra Tech, the Navy contractor responsible for developing the removal plans. "Out of 38 samples we took, 30 exceeded residential limits. We've estimated that we are going to be removing 6,500 cubic yards of dioxin-contaminated soil." Plans to remove the piles, which were dredged out of the canal during routine maintenance in the 1970s and measure almost a mile long, were triggered after a concerned resident alerted Seabee Center environmental officials of their existence. ...
