HAFB probing soils for poisons Dangerous PCBs have been found, but officials don't know the concentration By Matthew D. LaPlante The Salt Lake Tribune (UT) February 21, 2007A comprehensive analysis of soil in a residential area at Hill Air Force Base will begin today, following tests in December and January that revealed potentially dangerous levels of polychlorinated biphenyls. The chemicals, also known as PCBs, were discovered in one area of the base at levels 50 times higher than what is considered safe by an environmental risk assessor hired by Hill. Health effects associated with PCB exposure include acne-like skin conditions in adults and neurobehavioral and immunological changes in children, according to the national Centers for Disease Control. But at a meeting with Hill residents on Tuesday, base officials and toxicologists said they do not yet know at what level in the soil the high PCB concentration was discovered in the early tests. The new analysis should answer that question, they said, giving a better indication as to how dangerous and widespread the problem is. ...
