Board may push for funds By Bridan D. Bridgeford Baraboo News Republic (WI) February 22, 2007Sauk County Board members will decide tonight if they want to urge federal officials to earmark money to better track groundwater contamination from the obsolete Badger Army Ammunition Plant. During Tuesday's Sauk County Executive and Legislative Committee meeting, Planning and Zoning Director Lance Gurney presented a resolution appealing for federal funds for a thorough analysis of water around the obsolete gunpowder production facility. The analysis is necessary to track the spread of chemicals, primarily dinitrotoluene or DNT, which contaminated the plant's soil when it was active during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, he said. Gurney provided a map of tests done last fall which shows spots on the BAAP grounds and neighboring lands where DNT has been detected in amounts of a millionth of a gram per liter or less. One spot is outside the plant to the northeast, while most are south of the plant along Lake Wisconsin and toward the village of Prairie du Sac. ...
