Army: Lead bullets no threat

The firing of lead ammunition at Camp Edwards has not caused any 
"significant" lead contamination in the Upper Cape's drinking water 
supply, according to a draft National Guard report set for release in 
coming weeks.

But the return of lead ammunition to the base after a 10-year ban will 
come only with safety precautions, Guard officials and environmental 
regulators agreed this week.

"It isn't really considered a threat to the water, if properly managed," 
Mark Begley, director of the base's Environmental Management Commission, 
said of lead ammunition.
