County Council lukewarm on Lakewood annexation plan

Lakewood's proposal to annex McChord Air Force Base and part of Fort Lewis has received a lukewarm reception from the Pierce County Council.

One county elected official said Tuesday night that the annexation is too expensive and not needed. If Lakewood annexed the bases, the county would lose about $2 million annually in tax revenues that would shift to the city.

Lakewood officials say the annexation is important to protect the bases from possible closure due to encroaching private development. The bases employ 34,000 military personnel and civilians. The two bases account for $2.2 billion in economic activity annually, nearly a third of all such activity in Pierce County, a 2004 state study says.

The Air Force already owns most of the 206-acre crash zone, also known as a clear zone. The Air Force wants the zone cleared of all activity for safety reasons, but lacks the funds to purchase the rest of the area.
