Two Y-12 uranium leaks probed No workers were contaminated; suspect tank being monitored By FRANK MUNGER Knoxville News Sentinel (TN) March 9, 2007OAK RIDGE - Two spills of an enriched uranium solution forced the shutdown of a uranium-recycling process at the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant, a plant spokesman confirmed Thursday. Bill Wilburn said the secondary-extraction process would remain on "administrative hold" until plant officials can fully determine why the solution leaked from a storage tank inside a Y-12 building. Secondary extraction is one of six chemical processes that Y-12 uses to recycle highly enriched uranium, a key material in nuclear warheads. ...
