Army Corps eyes land near Pantex

Anna Marie Wink was a schoolgirl in 1941 when Japanese bombs blasted the
Navy fleet at Pearl Harbor, killing more than 2,000 sailors. The attack
spurred a nationwide call to arms.

Army agents soon began scouring the Texas Panhandle countryside, searching
the land for a new plant that would churn out thousands of bombs and
artillery shells for the war effort.

Now, more than 60 years later, the Army Corps of Engineers is again taking
stock of private land and at least two homes east of the plant. It is part
of a proposed 2,200-acre land buy the National Nuclear Security
Administration says will clean up the polluted leftovers of the Cold War
and protect the Ogallala Aquifer from future contamination.
