Guard will ask state to lift ban on lead ammo By AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times March 14, 2007FALMOUTH - National Guard leaders will formally ask state environmental regulators today to adopt new policies that would allow soldiers to fire lead ammunition at Camp Edwards. The federal Environmental Protection Agency banned lead ammunition at the base in 1997, when regulators feared the toxic metal could taint the Upper Cape's drinking water supply. A state "environmental performance standard" - a regulation issued by a state agency to protect the drinking water aquifer under Camp Edwards - also prevents firing lead ammo at the base. Under a proposed new standard that the Guard will submit to state regulators today at a meeting of the state Environmental Management Commission in Falmouth, the Guard would recover and recycle as much lead from the ranges as possible and prevent the metal from percolating through the soil. ...
