Army ends plan for strip-mine disposal By Ken Ward Jr. Charleston Gazette (WV) April 4, 2007U.S. Army officials have given up their plan to dispose of old military explosives by using them as blasting boosters at mountaintop removal mines in Southern West Virginia. After a high-profile accident involving the explosive tetryl, the Army shipped remaining amounts of the material to a military installation in Oklahoma, officials confirmed this week. About 360,000 pounds of tetryl boosters were trucked to the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant near McAlester, Okla., where they were demilitarized, said Army spokesman Steve Abney. ...
