Contamination found at airport By Tracy Overstreet Grand Island Independent (NE) April 22, 2007Contaminated groundwater has been found at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island. Officials of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said mercury and arsenic were found as part of testing being done on formerly utilized defense sites in Nebraska. Nebraska has 102 such sites across the state, including the Central Nebraska Regional Airport. Government records show the local base was active as a military airfield from 1942 to 1948 and again from 1962 to 1969. "They did detect dissolved mercury, but it did not exceed the safe drinking water standard," said Brian Mitchell, the Nebraska site assessment manager for the EPA's Kansas City office. ...
