Wastes of War: Out in openFormer military facilities have been devoted to a wide range of uses -- but environmental risks remain By Russell Carollo sacramento Bee (CA) April 23, 2007Once the most private of places -- some surrounded by high fences and patrolled round-the-clock by heavily armed guards -- hundreds of former military bases across California have become the most public of places. Schools, housing developments, colleges, golf courses, shopping centers, parking lots, farms, fairground sites and movie locations have been built on former military sites. Communities and taxpayers stand to benefit when former military bases become public facilities, but hazards abound, an examination by The Sacramento Bee found. Many are contaminated with unexploded ordnance and other waste that can escape into soil, ground-water and open waterways. By accepting land from the military at little or no cost, state and local taxpayers also may be accepting responsibility for multimillion-dollar cleanups. ...
