Whittaker-Bermite Moves Ahead on Soil Cleanup By Kristopher Daams Santa Clarita Signal (CA) May 17, 2007Efforts to clean up the contaminated soil at the Whittaker-Bermite site that lies in the middle of Santa Clarita have been substantially more productive and effective, but full cleanup of the polluted underground water will still take a few decades. ...The use of a mixture of various compounds has led to a 98 percent success rate for the contaminated soil. From January to April, 57,000 tons of soil were treated, and only 1,000 tons had to be re-treated to reach an undetectable level of perchlorate, said Hassan Amini, who is overseeing the soil cleanup on behalf of Whittaker Corp. ...Amini said different elements were added to bacteria that were then inserted into the contaminated soil to break up the perchlorate. ...
