Nisqually Tribe wants to obtain, perhaps develop ancestral lands ROB TUCKER AND MICHAEL GILBERT Tacoma News Tribune (A) May 17, 2007The Nisqually Tribe wants to acquire property that includes Fort Lewis Golf Course next to DuPont. “That’s our traditional homelands,” Cynthia Iyall, chairwoman of the tribal council, said Wednesday. “Like other tribes, we’re trying to regain what we can.” The tribe might develop some of the land along Interstate 5 for the economic benefit of its 655 members, Iyall said. But it’s too early to tell if any changes would be made or how a transfer would work. She ruled out a casino. ...Pierce County Councilman Dick Muri said he can’t support a land transfer to the tribe because he opposes any encroachment upon Fort Lewis or McChord Air Force Base. He said the tribe or anyone else is blocked from getting the land because the county has “reversionary rights” if the donation’s no longer used for military purposes, he said. ...
