Treatment plant opens By Amanda Lehmert Cape Cod Times June 28, 2007CAMP EDWARDS - The electricity is whirring at the Army's new groundwater treatment plant. But the tainted water barely makes a whisper as it pulses through the $6.1 million facility - coming out clean at a rate of about 800 gallons per minute. The treatment facility, which cleans a plume of explosives and perchlorate traveling toward Bourne, started pumping officially on Tuesday. It's the first long-term cleanup solution to a plume to be put into operation by the Army at Camp Edwards. The groundwater, which serves as the primary source of drinking water for the Upper Cape, was contaminated by munitions burning and other disposal actions in the 1970s and 1980s. The plume, which is 1,000 feet wide, contains Royal Demolition Explosives as high as 370 parts per billion and perchlorate as high as 500 parts per billion, according to Kris Curley, spokesman for the Army's Impact Area Groundwater Study Program. ...
